Our history
AMPEERS ENERGY was founded in 2019 as a Fraunhofer spin-off by Dr. Karsten Schmidt, Gerrit Ellerwald and Tobias Müller. From the very beginning, the goal was to pave the way towards a climate-neutral real-estate industry.
With more than 80 employees, we are shaping the energy supply of tomorrow and enabling property owners to tap into new sources of income by switching to clean heat and energy. Renowned investors support us on this path.
Dr. Karsten Schmidt
CEO & Founder
Dr. Karsten Schmidt studied Renewable Energy Management and holds a PhD in Economics. In the course of his professional career, he held various management positions, including at E.ON. Later, he was responsible for corporate business development for the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. In 2018, he also founded the Open District Hub e.V., a non-profit association dedicated to the success of the energy transition.
Gerrit Ellerwald
CFO & FounderGerrit Ellerwald holds a degree in Business Administration and an Entrepreneurship MBA. He held various management positions during his professional career - among others at BMW, but also in the energy industry, where he worked for E.ON. He was already a successful founder of the SaaS/E-commerce startup Grünspar, which was acquired by EWE AG.
Tobias Müller
COO & FounderTobias Müller holds a master's degree in Economics Engineering with a focus on energy and innovation. In addition, he gained experience in the field of decentralized energy management. In addition to his knowledge in the field of tenant electricity, including from his time at Polarstern, he contributes to AMPEERS ENERGY through his expertise in market analysis and structuring.

BIG
Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft m.b.H. (BIG) is one of the largest companies in the field of building management and new construction in Austria. It is wholly owned by the Republic of Austria and manages large parts of the federal government infrastructure on its behalf. Among other things, BIG manages more than 400 school and over 200 university properties throughout Austria. The company’s subsidiary ARE Austrian Real Estate owns almost 560 office and residential properties.
